Motivational tips

By making physical activity a regular part of your day (akin to taking a shower or brushing your teeth), you're more likely to "stay with it." Start slowly and build up your activity levels. Be sure to set small, attainable goals, and reward yourself for achieving them. Most importantly, make it fun by picking activities that you like to do.

  • Find a workout buddy. Choose someone who is at the same level of fitness that you are, you'll be able to motivate each other.
  • Set a 1-month goal that you can reach. Plan to walk for 10 minutes during lunch 3 days a week; or to stretch for 5 minutes each morning before getting into the shower.
  • Keep a record of what you do. It may be as simple as circling the days on the calendar when you exercise.
  • Reward yourself! When you reach your first goal, treat yourself to something special. However, do not use food as a motivator.

Motivation comes in different forms for different "bodies." A workout buddy, a favorite sport or activity, aerobic/fitness classes whatever you decide, you need to develop a routine that works for you. Remember, variety is the spice of life. Try incorporating different activities into your routine to reduce boredom. Once you start seeing the results of your efforts, you'll be more likely to stick with your program.
